Lasik Surgery For Chicago Business Woman

It's a no-eyeglasses day for Patty Kryscha, a 50-year-old district marketing manager in Chicago for Southwest Airlines.

Working at a company known for its youthfulness, Ms. Kryscha keeps up on current styles, dresses sharp and tries to avoid wearing the heavy trifocals that weigh on her nose — and psyche.

She knows Lasik surgery, in which a laser is used to correct the cornea, could improve her vision, allowing her to toss the glasses.

But she shudders at the thought.

"I have this fear that when they do Lasik, it will smell like my eye is burning. Maybe it's irrational. My sister's a nurse and thinks I'm crazy, but she says I might (smell it) just a little," Ms. Kryscha says. "That being said, I don't like wearing glasses. I've worn contacts so long I've worn a path around my eyes. It's like a callus. So now I'm back to glasses."

But some days, like this day, she can't bear wearing them....

Lasik Eye Surgery In O

The June issue if O, The Oprah Magazine features a comprehensive article about Lasik laser eye surgery that includes contributions from Hagele, Kathryn Colby, MD, PhD, director of the Joint Clinical Research Center at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and Deepinder Dhaliwal, MD, chief of cornea and refractive surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.

Lasik laser eye surgery was developed ten years ago to reshape the cornea (clear front of the eye) and reduce the need for glasses and contact lenses. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within hours or days. Although over 5 million surgeries have been performed worldwide, Lasik is not for everyone, according to Hagele.

"Lasik may be appropriate for the vast majority of people, but sometimes something else is better," says Hagele. "The very well presented article in Oprah's magazine includes information about new 'helper lenses' that can be placed inside the eye for people who have very bad vision and new laser and non-laser technology to reduce the need for glasses. I was delighted to see Oprah's article's emphasis on surgeon selection."

"The single most important decision for someone considering Lasik is the choice of doctor. There are so many options and evaluations that the advice and abilities of a highly skilled surgeon are required," adds Hagele.

Post Laser Eye Surgery Sun Protection

People who have had retinal problems, cataract or laser surgery, or take certain medications (including tetracycline, sulfa drugs, birth-control pills, diuretics and tranquilizers) are at increased risk of UV eye damage.

Generally speaking, the more time you spend outside, the more UV radiation your eyes and skin are exposed to. It’s very likely that environmental changes, particularly the ongoing depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer, make your eyes more vulnerable to damage than in the past. You need to be particularly careful when the sun's rays are the most intense, during the summer and spring, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Sunglasses are a must, but some are much better than others. Before you try on a new pair, check to make sure they have 100 percent protection against both types of ultraviolet radiation: UVA and UVB. They age your skin and cause sunburns. Both types can also give you skin cancer, as well as damage your retina, cornea and your eye's clear lens.
